Information for Families, Staff and Community Partners

A comprehensive guide to inclusive education policies, procedures, and supports in Peace River South schools, designed to ensure equitable, meaningful learning for every student.

This resource outlines policies, procedures and guidelines that support the delivery of inclusive education services in Peace River South schools. These policies and procedures reflect those outlined in the BC Ministry of Education and Childcare Inclusive Education Services Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

The purpose of this resource is to provide a guide regarding BC Ministry of Education and Childcare and Peace River South School District policy and best practices, to support schools with the development and implementation of inclusive education. The information is for parents/guardians, principals, staff and school-based teams. It can also be a supporting document for social service and health care providers, and local community agencies.

As inclusive education services are one of the key pieces to supporting students in schools this resource should be used in partnership with others that are not specific to inclusive education. Links to key documents can be found in Section 7 of this resource. Other documents can be found at www.sd59.ca and at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/teach/resources-for-teachers/inclusive-education.

As the field of inclusive education is evolving, this resource is updated regularly to reflect any changes in practice and personnel. The goal is to ensure that all school district staff and the local community are aware of the inclusive education services available.

This includes:

  • procedures used to identify, assess and plan for students
  • procedures used to include parents/guardians and other service providers
  • reporting procedures and monitoring of student progress using Inclusive and Competency Based Individual Education Plans (ICBEPs)
  • a description of district services and programs
  • specialist staff assignments and job descriptions

The Peace River School District is committed to an inclusive education system where every student is a meaningful part of the learning community.

School districts are mandated to design and implement individual education plans for students with diverse abilities. A students with diverse abilities is a student who has a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature, has a learning disability or has special gifts or talents. In BC, the students whose exceptionalities are significant, have a Ministry Inclusive Education identification.

These plans are called Inclusive and Competency-Based Individual Education Plan (ICBIEP); An individual education plan designed for a student that includes one or more of the following:

  • learning outcomes that are different from, or in addition to, expected learning outcomes set out in the applicable educational program guide,
  • a list of support services,
  • a list of adapted materials, instruction or assessment methods.
